In the Dark


Thrilled to announce the sequel to Dog Gone is in the world. In the Dark will have its first launch at the 2017 Melbourne Writers Festival as a part of the event Hot off the (Small) Press. If you’re out and about at the festival do come along and help us celebrate – it’s a free event. Or add it to your MWF wishlist so you don’t forget!

Celapene Press will also be re-issuing Dog Gone in December so stay tuned for news of a dedicated double launch once it’s out!


I pulled the letter out of my pocket and looked at Grandpa’s writing. … I should give it to Mum – it was hers after all. … But how could I? I’d have to admit going down into the cellar. … Now that I’d come this far, I’d have to read what he’d said.
I stood in the moonlight and began.

A forbidden foray into an old cellar leads Ish to unearth a startling discovery. When he opens his late Grandpa’s undelivered letter to Mum, Ish is sucked into a vortex of secrets and lies – and one unexpected truth.

Now he must live with the consequences.

A story about a boy who writes poetry to make sense of his world – and learns that in the face of loss, treachery and deceit, love is what matters.

Perspective

It is impossible to concentrate. When you know your child is on the operating table, anaesthetised, tube down her throat, and soon to have seven teeth hacked and yanked from her mouth, how can you? You look at your watch again. Wonder which tooth he’s up to, the oral surgeon who casually told you in his rooms about the nerve that runs close to the extraction site, the one that controls taste and sensation in the lips. You feel guilty that you didn’t take her to the hospital yourself. Even though her father was happy to take time off and she was happy either way. You time-travel to two hours ago and watch them drive off, waving. Feel the gut-wrench of staying behind. Everything is ready for when they return. You’ve filled the fridge with mush. The Book

What a journey you go on when you write a book! It’s an adventure with twists and turns, unexpected hazards, exhilarating moments, excruciating moments and some delightful surprises. And I’m not talking about the plot. I’m talking about the writing process. Oh, and there’s lots of walking for miles and miles towards the horizon – which plays tricks on you and recedes instead of getting closer. When you start out, you don’t realize what you’ve taken on. Well, not in my case. You don’t realize how many hours you’ll sit in front of the computer screen, tapping away in faith – that you’ll get there. And that it will be good.
